Mohawk vs. Fauxhawk

Scott's ribbing got me all riled up. So here's an informational post on the differences between a mohawk and a fauxhawk haircut/style.

Mo·hawk

Etymology: of Algonquian origin; akin to Narragansett or Massachusett Mohowawog Mohawk, literally, cannibal
Date: 1634

3 : a hairstyle with a narrow center strip of usually upright hair and the sides of the head shaved

Here are some examples of a mohawk haircut fresh from the tubes of the Internet:

Since "fauxhawk" isn't really a word, it's not in the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, we must look to urbandictionary.com.

fauxhawk: A full head of hair combed into the middle to fabricate the look of a mohawk.

As you can clearly see, fauxhawks don't have a defined line from where the short and long hair meet. It's basically just combed straight up into the shape of a mohawk. Fauxhawks are generally associated with pop-culture and general douchebaggery. Mohawks are generally associated with anti-pop-culture.

And for my final exhibit: a photo of me. I have a mohawk, not a fauxhawk.

If you're going to do something, do it all out. fauxhawks are a cop-out for people who don't want to make the commitment of shaving the sides of their head.

I’m terrified

The Fed cut interest rates to zero today in an unprecedented move to try and get the economy back on its feet.

This can only end badly. I'm predicting these things will happen:

  1. The fed will start printing money like crazy
  2. Banks will stop giving interest on your savings accounts, maybe even start charging you to keep your money there
  3. Massive inflation will occur
  4. A loaf of bread and a gallon of milk will cost 20x what it costs today
  5. The government will say they helped us

I'm absolutely terrified of the people who are leading our country right now because they are going to turn the United States into a place where I don't want to live anymore.

- I have no faith in our government.
- I have no faith in our financial system's ability to recover from the idiots running this place.

Americans are resilient people, but you can only "try to help us" for so long till the people rise up against the government to set things right.

AT&T & Verizon, Two Peas in a Pod

Looks like AT&T is making the same mistake that Verizon has been making with their ".002 cents per kilobyte equals .002 dollars per kilobyte."

The art director that approved this needs to be fired:

http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/specials/iphone-info.jsp

And they did it again on the text plan graphic:

So this means that with the new iPhone plan, if I get the 450 minute plan and go over by an additional 450 minutes, my bill will only be $2.025 more? That's highly unlikely.

Someone needs to teach these wireless companies elementary level mathematics. I think they meant either "20¢" or "$.20".

Let's compare the previous scenario with what's advertised and what they probably mean:

450 additional minutes x .45¢ = $2.025
450 additional minutes x 45¢ = $202.50

Big difference, huh?

AT&T is not in my good graces today.

POINT 20 CENTS is NOT the same as 20 CENTS!
How does a huge corporation like this make such a blatant mistake?

WTF Netflix?

Just got an email from Netflix saying they're eliminating the "profiles" feature! I can't believe this. It's going to make managing the DVDs my wife and I want (very different tastes) extremely difficult.

I'd think about switching to Blockbuster, but I love the "watch it now" functionality of Netflix and my Xbox 360.

Really, Netflix? I'd expect improvements to your feature set, not moving back to the stone age. I'm very disappointed in Netflix.

Important News Regarding Netflix Profiles

Dear Mark,

We wanted to let you know we will be eliminating Profiles, the feature that allowed you to set up separate DVD Queues under one account, effective September 1, 2008.

Each additional Profile Queue will be unavailable after September 1, 2008. Before then, we recommend you consolidate any of your Profile Queues to your main account Queue or print them out.

While it may be disappointing to see Profiles go away, this change will help us continue to improve the Netflix website for all our customers.

If you have any questions, please go to http://www.netflix.com/Help?p_faqid=3962 or call us anytime at 1 (888) 638-3549. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Tax Time Troubles

Here I am, 5 days away from tax time and I don't even know if I owe any taxes. I'm never having my taxes prepared by a 3rd party ever again.

I moved from Florida to North Carolina, bought a house, and was worried about issues resulting from the move. I'd never paid state income tax (Florida gets most state revenue from tourism-based businesses) so I figured I'd just have my taxes done and not have the stress associated with preparing them myself with TurboTax or something like it.

Big Mistake.

I met with the tax consultant in February and she told me all the documents that I was missing. I told her that I'd email her PDFs of the missing documents. I did that 5 days later. Then silence...

I finally called the business and asked the status of my return about 2 weeks ago. The consultant said that she'd never received my email. So I checked my Gmail sent box. There it was, dated Fri, Feb 29, 2008 at 1:46 PM. I re-sent it and waited on the phone till she said she'd received the documents. That was Mon, Mar 31, 2008 at 10:34 AM.

Yesterday I called and was met with an answering machine 3 times during normal business hours (I called both locations multiple times). So I left a message. I'll bet you can guess what happened: nobody called me back.

My primary reason for wanting my taxes prepared by someone else was to alleviate stress associated with April 15th. This situation has increased my stress levels beyond what they were last year because I don't have my tax documents in hand; they are at the CPA's house and I have no clue as to the status of my return.

Today I went to the office and was met with a locked door. I knocked and someone came and unlocked it. I talked to the secretary and She told me that the CPA had all the documents at home. Since when do you not work at work during working hours?

She said she'd check on the status and let me know tomorrow and I said, "No. I need to know today so that I can make other arrangements if they're not complete."

"Ok, I'll try and find out and I'll give you a call later today."

Satisfactory, but I'm still not pleased.

The major error on the part of this business was a simple failure to communicate with me, their customer. Now I'm going to be asking for a rate reduction because of the stress they've introduced into my life when the original intention of using them was to keep that stress from me. A little "we're working on them" or "we'll have them for you to sign by April X" would have been sufficient for me to stop freaking out.

I'm certainly competent and capable of doing my taxes myself. I'll not be using this business again. I'll be doing my taxes myself next year.
