Dining Room 2.0 beta1
We always seem to start these types of projects late during the weekend, but always get them done.
We'd been talking about moving Dana's office downstairs since it seems that half of her stuff ends up in the dining room anyway. Might as well move stuff down there and consolidate the work stuff into one room.
So we went shopping.
I don't really like painting and this is the first time I've ever painted a room two different colors. I really like the way it's looking. There's still one coat left to go but I see the potential. The pictures don't do the colors justice.
The bottom is leftover from the bedroom... we vastly overestimated the amount of paint we'd need, so it was sitting in the garage till tonight. Glad I could find a use for about $40 worth of unused paint.

Almost Burnt My House to a Crisp
OK, maybe I'm being a little melodramatic, but I got a call from my wife about 1:20 this afternoon saying that the fish tank was completely shut off. Nothing was going... no pumps, no light, no protein skimmer... NOTHING!
Naturally, I freaked out and drove home as fast carefully as possible. I went in and assessed the situation and determined that the breaker must have been tripped by something. They're building a new house about 3 doors down so maybe they interrupted the power connection for a minute and when everything tried to come on at the same time it overloaded the breaker. Yeah... maybe that's what happened.
So I go into the garage and trip the breaker and watch the fish tank come back to life. We determined it had only been off for less than 1.5 hrs so the corals should be all right.
Then I head back to work.
I sit down and unlock my workstation only to receive another phone call from my wife, "It happened again. And there's a big cloud of foul smelling smoke coming out from under the fish tank!"
"Unplug EVERYTHING," I said, and again, I rushed home.
It didn't take long to see what happened. The light on the heater was flickering on and off rapidly (indicative of a short). So I unplugged the heater and proceeded to remove it from the sump. Much to my surprise, the heater fell into two pieces as I attempted to remove it.
What a freakin' close call! I'm glad the thing was under water or it'd probably burned my house down!
All my corals seem to be doing OK except the frogspawn which looks a bit "deflated" at the moment. Hopefully he'll perk back up. The fish all seem fine except my Tomini Tang who has a few white spots on him, presumably from knocking into things while he was freaking out (he's really skittish).
Wanna see?
I'm glad it was a clean break or I'd had to get the glass shards out of my sump. There were, however, bits and pieces of carbon on the bottom of the tank that I got out with a turkey baster.
I just finished doing a ±15% water change.
Food Network HD
I'd be willing to pay extra for Food Network in High Definition, but looks like I may be getting it coming October 15th. Here's to hoping they bundle it in with all the other free Digital HD channels!
Time Warner Cable's new HD channels in October - Engadget HD
Some providers can't stop talking about when they'll add new HD channels, while others would rather keep things under wraps 'till the new programming goes live. While both strategies have their advantages, not communicating with your customers is usually not a good idea. It appears now that TWC has quite a few plans for HD expansion in October, as customers in at least one market can expect to see many of the same channels DirecTV has been touting including, TBS HD, The History Channel HD, CNN HD, Lifetime Movies HD, and Food Network HD. While TBS HD is expected to go live in time for the MLB playoffs on October 1st, the rest are expected on October 15th. We can only assume that TWC and Bright House Networks customers all over the country will see these channels around the same time, but without a specific announcement, your guess is as good as ours.
Badcock Lives Up to the First Part of its Name – BAD
I've been putting off purchasing a dining room suite since I moved form Florida to North Carolina about 5 months ago. So that room, just to the right of the front door to our house, has sat empty for too long.
WeMy wife finally decided to get the ball rolling and searched online for the style/look we wanted for our formal dining room. The only thing that was even close to the Pottery Barn set Dana liked was at Badcock (& More!).
Last Saturday we went down to the Greensboro store (according to Google: 19.6 mi – about 23 mins). We searched through the surprisingly large showroom but couldn't find the piece we were looking for. So I asked an associate for help. The store was severely understaffed for a Saturday afternoon but we were soon helped and told that they didn't have that set in the store, but would use their computer systems to look up other stores in the area that did.
My wife and I were informed that the store in Burlington had it out on the showroom floor and they called to verify that, yes, they did have it in the store.
After a bit of deliberation because of the distance, we drove from Greensboro to the Burlington Badcock (21.8 mi – about 26 mins). Instead of looking around we headed straight to the customer service desk to talk to "Chris" who had told the Greensboro store employee they had the furniture set.
I can't begin to tell you the agony I felt when "Chris" said he "misheard" the woman on the phone and mistakenly though we were looking for a living room set with a similar name. They look it up in their computer... they indeed have two of the chairs so the manager goes into the back to look for the chairs.
Luckily Badcock sells big screen TVs so my wife sat down and watched about 45 minutes of Shrek 2 while I was busy sorting this out... yes, 45 minutes. It turns out that the chairs were in inventory but had been ordered by a customer and never picked up from the warehouse which was then applied back to that store's inventory list even though it wasn't in the store. Great.
I'll never buy anything from Badcock because to add insult to injury, the store manager was trying to convince me that I was having a "great" day because there was not a lot of traffic. "It's good traffic as long as you're not standing still" and "What a beautiful day for a drive" were some of stupid phrases I heard come out of this man's mouth.
I drove 79.6 miles on Saturday (43.6 of them were for absolutely nothing). On the way home on a whim we stopped at Ashley Furniture and bought a dining room set with more pieces, that we liked better, and that cost less than the one at Badcock.
EAT IT, BADCOCK.

Our New Addition: Tomini “Flame Fin” Tang (Ctenochaetus tominiensis)
He's come out of quarantine and has been added to the main display tank as of yesterday. The Sailfin tang was harassing him pretty bad last night when we put him in there and I was worried that he was going to get beat up. I think our Sailfin was just mad that the Tomini was in his cave where he normally sleeps.
It was kind of fun seeing them be territorial... the sailfin was backing into the Tomini (I assume to try and slash at him with his spikes).
This morning he was looking a bit rough. His tail was a bit "nibbled up" but throughout the day today he has gotten progressively bolder in the tank, exploring a bit more and standing his ground with the Sailfin... heck, the quarantine tank he was the big-dog, sharing 30 gallons with only a few blue-green chromis.
Here are some photos of him. I think we've named him "Bonno" to keep with out musicians/celebrity naming scheme in the tank. Bonno joins the tank with Elvis (midas blenny), Sonny and Cher (perc clown pair), Mr. T. (pacific sailfin), and John Deere (lawnmower blenny), among others.
Some New Corals
Got a few new corals for my aquarium:
Pink and lime green Florida Ricordea:

Thanks to Dee for the ricordea and Dave for the zoos.
My New Engineer Goby
I got a new engineer goby a few days ago and let him get used to his new home before I started taking photos of him.
Reading up about them, He's actually a blenny!
My Pocket Guide to Reef Aquarium Fishes says that he's actually a Convict Blenny but is often referred to as an Engineer Goby. Another interesting fact is that they're the only species in their family!
He's already begun digging under my rocks and luckily, I had the foresight when doing my aquascape to put the rocks directly on the glass. No cave-ins for me!
He's about 4 inches long and we've affectionately named him "Tad" because my wife thinks he looks like a really long tadpole!
Here's a few photos I took of him last night.
(here's all of them)
