There Go My Dreams of an iPhone 3G

AT&T announces iPhone 3G plans, 8 a.m. launch time on July 11

Existing AT&T customers who are not currently eligible for an upgrade discount can purchase iPhone 3G for $399 for the 8GB model or $499 for the 16GB model. Both options require a new two-year service agreement. In the future, AT&T will offer a no-contract-required option for $599 (8GB) or $699 (16GB).

I go to the AT&T website and log in to check my availability.

Crap. April, 2009.

So I select the phone since it says something about the iPhone being different and I get this:

Who knows if I'm eligible and when I'm eligible. Is it not until 2009? I'm certainly not going to pay $399 for the new iPhone... that's DOUBLE the subsidized price.

I'm starting to feel like a Canadian Rogers customer. Way to stick it to your already loyal and paying customers, AT&T.

Steve Jobs: what happened to, "No more than $199US, worldwide"?

I think it's ludicrous that I can pay $175 ETF and then purchase a $199 iPhone when activating a new line. That's $25 cheaper than what they want to charge me for the iPhone. But when the new line activation comes into play, you have to tack on an extra $38 (or so) making it pretty much a wash.

I'm furious right now... but who knows... maybe I don't need an iPhone as bad as I thought I did.

  1. 1) No one _NEEDS_ an iPhone.
    2) AT&T is going to get so much flack for this that they will certainly change their policies before the iPhone is released. If they don’t they’re going to lose a ton of money.

When is the iPhone going to be available to other US carriers?

  2. 1) I do.
    2) Here’s hoping. Highly doubtful.

The iPhone will be available (non-hacked) on other networks in July of 2012.

  3. I agree that no one _NEEDS_ an iPhone. I will also go a step further and say that most don’t _NEED_ a cellphone.

Be happy that you don’t have to pay the no-commitment price that every other carrier out there would have made you!

I’m wondering if I get an iPhone and drop it off a three story building and kill it what it would cost to replace?

Sorry to hear that you were/are furious, but you really didn’t expect AT&T to give a in contract customer the same price as a new customer, right?

  4. Whoops, looks like you will have to pay the no-commitment price. So AT&T’s pricing scheme is the same as other carriers . . .

  5. Just trying to think of the positive side here:

If you just ride out your contract with your existing equipment, you’ll be set for the iPhone 3.0 next year. Then we will get royally screwed when those who have iPhone 2.0 want to get that one. See, you’ll be ahead of the curve ;) ;) ;)

  6. Nope… I have to pay $399 for the phone, not the no-commitment price since I’m a current customer. It will make my contract reset back to two years.

  7. F the 3G iPhone. I live on the Edge baby. I don’t need GPS, I drive a 2008 M3, it has navigation.
